Beauty Tech: FOREO LUNA mini 2 Review, Photos

Tuesday, May 10, 2016

I've never used an electronic facial brush before now. I know, right? The most well-known one is definitely the Clarisonic, with several brands from drugstore to high-end releasing their own versions in the last few years. The FOREO LUNA mini 2 ($159 CAD, available in five colours) is a different sort of cleansing brush, which uses silicone bristles and doesn't require replacement heads. Keep reading for my review and experience with it!

First, I'm going to tell you what really excited me about the FOREO LUNA mini 2: No replacement brushes necessary! I'd been considering buying a Clarisonic, but the idea of buying replacement brush heads was a major deterrent for me. I know I'd end up going over the recommended replacement time, and I didn't like the idea of shelling out ~$30 per brush head after spending $150+ on the device. Put in simpler terms: I'm cheap and lazy. The LUNA mini 2 uses sonic vibrations to cleanse and exfoliate, and its bristles (called touch points) are made of silicone which can be washed with a gentle soap and warm water after use. FOREO recommends not using clay or grainy scrubs with the device to prevent the silicone from degrading (instead use liquid or cream products). The front of the LUNA mini 2 has smaller, softer touch points for use on normal/dry skin, with a small semi-circle of coarser ones at the top. The back has larger, coarser touch points for use on oily skin. I have combination skin, so the different touch point areas is a huge benefit.

The LUNA mini 2 is waterproof and includes a USB charger. Charging the device takes about an hour, and a full charge will last 5 months! There are eight different vibration settings which can be increased or decreased using the - and + buttons. The buttons are bit hard to press, which in a way is beneficial so that you don't accidentally press them while using the device, but I still wish they had an easier give. The different vibration settings are definitely useful, though -- I use a slower setting on my cheeks, and faster on my t-zone and chin. This prevents over-exfoliation and I definitely recommend testing different settings to find what works for your skin. FOREO recommends using the LUNA mini 2 for 15 second intervals on each part of the face (each cheek, chin, forehead, nose) -- when it's time to switch areas, the device will stop vibrating for a short moment, and the bottom section will light up. The LUNA mini 2 will also automatically shut off after three minutes to prevent overuse. Here are the full cleansing instructions from FOREO's LUNA mini 2 manual:

Every 15 seconds pulsations will pause to indicate when to cleanse a new zone.
- Cleanse your chin and cheek using circular movements and repeat on the other side.
- Starting from the center, cleanse your forehead with gentle outward circular strokes.
- Cleanse the nose by gliding up and down one side, then the other. Delicately cleanse the under-eye region using outward strokes – we suggest reducing the pulsation intensity."

I have had such a great experience with FOREO's LUNA mini 2! My skin is always so soft after using it, and my pores look smaller too. I can get as much (or as little) exfoliation I need on each area of my face, and the different touch points are very handy for the oilier or drier parts of my face. I love that it's portable, waterproof, and no brush head replacements necessary!

FOREO LUNA mini 2

I can't tell you if the LUNA mini 2 is better than the Clarisonic, or even FOREO's other LUNA versions, but it's been a huge boon to my skincare regimen. $159 isn't cheap, but considering you don't have to keep buying brush heads or anything, I think it's a good investment. If you can, I highly recommend you treat yo'self! (And now I've got my eye on the ISSA toothbrush...) FOREO is sold at Sephora and Foreo.com.
