Softlips LUXE Review + Giveaway! (Canada-only)

Monday, December 21, 2015

Happy (almost) winter! The weather's been not too terrible here, but I'm still reeling from last year's never-ending snow and freezing temperatures. Lip balm is a staple year-round, but it's even more important this time of year. I was recently given the opportunity to try Softlips LUXE* lip balms, as well as host a giveaway, so both I and a lucky reader will have soft and chap-free lips this winter! Keep reading to see what I thought of Softlips LUXE and for details on the giveaway (Canada-only).

Softlips LUXE promises five benefits in one tube: hydration, replenishment, smoothness, protection, and adds shine. I'd say any lip balm worth its salt covers those factors, and I've actually tried some that didn't. Thankfully, Softlips lives up to its claims.

There are two flavours in the LUXE line, Silky Shea and Creamy Coconut (both $4.67 CAD). Creamy Coconut smells like -- you guessed it! -- coconut, and is a nice scent reminder of summer. Silky Shea has a candy-like scent. Both have the same formula aside from the scent, and they are packaged in twist-up tubes and are in the shape of lipstick bullets. As I was testing them, I was concerned the bullets might break, but they are firm enough that this hasn't happened. One thing that is a bit odd is that the flavour isn't printed anywhere on the actual tubes. You just have to remember blue = Silky Shea and purple = Creamy Coconut, I suppose (though the scent gives it away, too).

I quite like the formula of Softlips LUXE's balms. They are petrolatum-based, but don't give lips a heavy wax feeling. The formula is smooth and ever-so slightly glossy. There's menthol which gives lips a cooling feeling, and it can be an irritating ingredient. I haven't experienced irritation, but keep it in mind if you have sensitivities. There are some great ingredients in there too like shea butter and coconut oil. These lip balms have kept my lips from becoming a chapped up mess, which is pretty awesome considering I also have a cold.

**If you're wondering why polyethylene is in the formula, as it is usually associated with microbeads in scrubs, I looked it up and apparently it's also used for a few different purposed in moisturizers. Neat.
