clean & clear

I have combination/oily skin (mostly on my t-zone and chin), so I was excited to try the Clean & Clear Oil-Free Routine* through CrowdSocial, which consisted of a cleanser, astringent, moisturizer, and blotting sheets. Inexpensive and available at most drugstores, I hoped to find a gem or two in the collection. Here are my thoughts on the products:

Morning Burst Shine Control Facial Cleanser:

This is a thick, foaming gel cleanser with fruit extracts and bursting beads that claims to wake you up as you use it. It definitely has what I'd call a "lift-me-up" fragrance, as it is fruity and fresh. I don't really think it wakes me up so much -- I'm probably too far gone in my coffee addiction for that -- but it's a nice scent, nonetheless.

Now, my one problem with this cleanser is that it irritated my skin. I'm not sure what ingredients caused this, and it hasn't happened before with other cleansers, but something in the mix caused redness and irritation on my face. The irritation subsided after a few hours, but I'm wary to use the cleanser again. Thankfully, it did at least clean my skin well, but my skin's chemistry just doesn't like the formula.

Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Parfum.
clean & clear essentials deep cleaning astringent

Essentials Deep Cleaning Astringent

This astringent/toner has a small amount of salicylic acid (0.5%), but alcohol is the first ingredient, and it can be an irritant. I prefer to use this on my very oily t-zone and chin area, where it doesn't seem to cause much irritation. I've had a couple pimples on my chin and this astringent does seem to be working to heal them. The scent of this product is very light and fresh, with an alcohol overtone. I love the bottle shape and design with the "2" in the background!

Ingredients: Medicinal Ingredient (% w/w): Salicylic Acid (0.5%). Non-medicinal Ingredients: Alcohol, Algae Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Benzophenone-4, Blue 1, Denatonium Benzoate, Dimethicone Propyl PG-Betaine, Glycerin, Isoceteth-20, Parfum, PEG-32, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Citrate, Water (eau).

clean & clear morning burst hydrating gel moisturizer

Morning Burst Hydrating Gel Moisturizer

This moisturizer really surprised me! It's a thicker gel, and I really expected it to be sticky and take a long time to sink into my skin. It actually soaks in very quickly and leaves a matte, non-sticky finish. The scent is light and fruity and reminds me a lot of summer. The gel is also cool on the skin, which makes me wish I had this in the summer, though I could also see it being great after a workout! The squeeze tube packaging is perfect for this formula, and I haven't experienced any irritation from using this. It is full of silicones, though surprisingly doesn't pill up on my face like some other silicone-heavy moisturizers.

Ingredients: Water (eau), Dimethicone, Glycerin, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Polyacrylamide, C12-14 Pareth 12, Cetearyl Olivate, Phenoxyethanol, Sorbitan Olivate, Dimethiconol, C13-14 Isoparaffin, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Carbomer, Laureth-7, Methylparaben, Propylene Glycol, Propylparaben, Ethylparaben, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Extract, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract , Sodium Hydroxide, Blue 1, Yellow 5, Green 5, Parfum.
clean & clear oil-absorbing sheets

Oil-Absorbing Sheets

Blotting sheets are essential for oily skin! These ones, I think, are a classic example. The package is incredibly lightweight and portable, and I love the way the sheets are dispensed  -- push on the tab on the bottom and a sheet will stick to the inside of the front cover. The material the sheets are made of has a vinyl-like consistency, and does a great job at absorbing excess oil. The sheets can also be used over makeup, and won't remove or mess it up, so they are great to use while out and about. The only thing I wish I could change would be to make the sheets biodegradable, though that would require a different material and might affect their efficacy. Still a great staple for your purse!

Morning Burst Shine Control Facial Cleanser (right), Morning Burst Hydrating Gel Moisturizer

Overall, I would recommend the Morning Burst Hydrating Gel Moisturizer and Oil Absorbing Sheets, and the Essentials Deep Cleaning Astringent if your skin can tolerate the alcohol. I wish I'd had a better experience with the cleanser, but 3/4 isn't bad!
