Esoteric Aesthetic Eye Shadows Review and Swatches

Saturday, November 22, 2014

Hey everybody! Today (or rather, tonight at the time I'm writing this) I have swatches from a newer indie company, Esoteric Aesthetic*. Specializing in eyeshadows based on magic and faith, there are
currently 23 core shades to choose from and five limited editions.

Full-size shadows (1 gram in a 5 g jar) are $5 USD, and samples (1/8 tsp in a baggie) are $1 USD. EA ships worldwide (yay!)

I generously received samples of the core shades to review (thank you!) I didn't include the full listing descriptions in my post, because it's already quite long. I do recommend you read them though (by clicking the shade names) to learn more about each shade's namesake! Swatches below the cut:

All swatches over primer (Urban Decay Primer Potion in Original) taken in indirect sunlight. Some edits were made for colour-balancing to get them as accurate as I could:

Ma'at, Chesed, Mercury Dime, Yesod

Ma'at

Ma'at is a barely-there peach with pink sparkle, but don't write it off before you try it. It's perfect for no-makeup looks, and makes a mean pin-up eye. Choose Ma'at when you want to look perfect and polished without being overdone.

Vegan and lip-safe.

Ma'at's beauty is so hard for my camera to capture -- it just glows. It reminds me of will-o'-the-wisps, and it would look great on its own or as a highlight (on browbone, inner corners, or even cheekbones).

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77492)(77491), Tin Oxide (778161), Synthetic Fluorophylogopite (77019), Silica, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Chesed is a stunning neutral that can be paired with anything. As mercy is always appropriate, so too is this shadow. On darker skin tones, this would make a beautiful highlight.

Vegan and lip-safe.

I love neutrals, and as the description says, this really is stunning!

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77491)(77492), Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Mercury Dime, Yesod, Chokmah

Mercury Dime is a beautiful silver with a red sheen and sparkle. It can be worn sheerly or over a sticky primer for more impact.

Vegan and lip-safe.

I only got a slight red sheen from Mercury Dime, but I love silvers and this is a great one.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77499), Synthetic Fluorophylogopite (77019), Silica, Tin Oxide (77861), Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Yesod is a warm brown with a gold sheen, to reflect the link between the divine and humanity. It can be worn sheer or over a sticky primer for maximum impact.

Not vegan but lip-safe.

Another gorgeous neutral; this time a warmer shade.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77499), Iron Oxide (77491), Carmine (75470), Silica, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

This beautiful sky blue, shot through with the silver sparks of the Divine, represents the second sephiroth on the Kaballistic Tree of Life.

Vegan but not lip-safe.

Such a pretty, pretty sky blue! I love these colours like Chokmah in the summer as
colourful eyeliner (just use a setting spray or fixative on your liner brush!)

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77491)(77492), Chromium Oxide (77288), Tin Oxide (778161), Ferric Ferrocyanide (77510), Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Sobek, Binah

Sobek

Sobek is a vibrant green on a blackened base, for those days when you need an extra punch of sexy. Sobek makes a magnificent, colorful smoky eye.

Vegan but not lip-safe.

Sobek reminds me of Christmas trees and it's my favourite shade of green. It's so shiny! I'm not great at smokey eyes yet, but I will definitely be trying this as one this season.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77499)(77491), Chromium Oxide Green (77288), Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Silica, Tin Oxide (778161), Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

While Binah's traditional color is green, I wanted something different, something feminine without being traditional. This beautiful soft blue, with hints of sparkle and sheen, ties together the Divine Feminine with Wisdom, Understanding, and Compassion.

Not vegan or lip-safe.

Another great blue, Binah is darker than Chokmah, which is a bit hard to tell in my photos. If you're a fan of blues though, they're both worth buying.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Tin Oxide (778161), Ferric Ferrocyanide (77510), Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Carmine (75470), Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Malkuth, Maiden, Set

Malkuth is an earthy brown that can be paired with anything, with copper sparks that hint at the Divine.

Not vegan but lip-safe.

Another stunning neutral. Malkuth would look great in the crease, or all over the lid and smoked out.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77491)(77499), Carmine (75470), Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Silica, Tin Oxide (778161), Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Maiden, Set, Djeheuty

Bring a bit of youthful energy to your day. Demure but never boring, Maiden is the perfect color to play up innocence without looking childish. The pale pink with golden shimmer is universally flattering.

Not vegan or lip-safe.

A gorgeous pink that balances the bubblegum with an amazing golden sheen!

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Carnauba Wax, Synthetic Fluorophylogopite (77019), Ultramarines (77007), Iron Oxide (77491), Silica, Tin Oxide (77861), Carmine, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Set is a dark, absolute black, littered with gold shimmer. It makes for a stunning smoky eye or eyeliner, and isn't for the weak at heart.

Vegan and lip-safe.

Every line needs a black shadow, and Set doesn't disappoint. Another one to definitely use in my smokey eye practice, and also as an eyeliner.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Tin Oxide (778161), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77499), Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Djeheuty, Laurel, Netzach

Djeheuty is a dark blackened blue, shot through with blue sparkle. It can easily be sheered out for something more wearable, used with a sticky primer for a dramatic eye, or used as a lovely eyeliner.

Vegan but not lip-safe.

Djeheuty pulls more grey on me, but would make a great crease colour when I want something different than browns.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77499), Tin Oxide (778161), Ferric Ferrocyanide (77510), Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Silica, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Laurel is a silvered green with subtle green sparks. Layered, it makes a great component to a green smoky eye, or it can be sheered for a subtle silvery wash.

Vegan and lip-safe.

I don't think I have a colour like Laurel in my collection! The silvery-green reminds me of Tolkien's elves!

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77499), Tin Oxide (778161), Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Silica, D&C Black #2, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Netzach, Tiphareth, Hedgeriding

Netzach is a stunning lavender, mixed with blue and pink sparkles. A perfect blending of what is masculine and feminine, it can make a sweet sheer wash of color or be layered for a more intense look.

Not vegan or lip-safe.

Netzach is more periwinkle blue on me, but I like it! I think it would be beautiful used in a soft eye look for spring.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Tin Oxide (778161), Ferric Ferrocyanide (77510), Carmine (75470), Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Carnauba Wax, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Tiphareth is a beautiful medium purple balanced by green shimmer. It's one of my favorites for a fun look, and like my other colors can be sheered down or worn over a sticky primer for an intense look.

Not vegan or lip-safe.

Tiphareth is one of the types of shades I love to look at in a swatch but I can never figure out how to wear without looking crazy. I really just need to take the plunge, don't I?

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77491), Ferric Ferrocyanide (77510), Ultramarines (77007), Carmine (75470), Tin Oxide (778161), Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Silica, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Hedgeriding

Hedgeriding is a beautiful burnt umber with a burgundy sheen. It calls to mind cool autumn days and pumpkin spice lattes, large bonfires and astral journeys in the evening. Wear it sheered or over a sticky primer for something more intense.

Vegan and lip-safe.

Another type of colour I need to wear more of (ORANGE!!), Hedgeriding really does remind me of fall. It's basically winter here now, so staring at the swatch as I type this is rather bittersweet!

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Iron Oxide (77499, 77491, 77492), Carnauba Wax, Silicon Dioxide, Silica, Calcium Carbonate

Daath, Hathor

Daath

Da'ath is a vibrant teal full of sparkle and shimmer. It can be sheered down easily for daytime wear on pale complexions, or layered over a sticky primer for maximum sparkle and shine.

Vegan but not lip-safe.

While Daath looks similar next to Hathor, it's actually darker and sparkly. I love teals/aquas/blue-greens, and of course it makes me long for summer (can you tell I'm not enjoying the current weather?).

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Chromium Oxide (77288),Silicon Dioxide, Synthetic Fluorophylogopite (77019), Silica, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Ferric Ferrocyanide (77510), Tin Oxide (778161), Calcium Carbonate

Hathor is a semi-sheer turquoise with a green duochrome which looks lovely as a wash over the lids. A sticky primer can bring the color to its full intensity.

Vegan but not lip-safe.

I just want to slap Hathor on my lids and go to the beach! Such shiny, wow.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Chromium Oxide Green (77288), Tin Oxide (778161), Ferric Ferrocyanide (77510), Silica, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Moonstone, Ouija, Hod

Moonstone is a sheer, shimmery color most appropriate for highlighting. Wear it on the browbone, the cheekbones, in the cleft of the upper lip, or patted over a lipcolor for a fun look.

Vegan and lip-safe.

Sorry for the chunky swatch! Moonstone is another glowy colour, like Ma'at (though obviously white rather than pink). Another great highlighting shade.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Tin Oxide (778161), Iron Oxide (77491)(77499), Synthetic Fluorophylogopite (77019), Silica, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Ouija, Hod

Ouija is a basic beige with a surprising blue shift. It makes a beautiful pin up eye, and can be used to kick your everyday look up a notch. Infinitely wearable with a hint of the unexpected.

Vegan and lip-safe.

Ouija blends into my skin a bit, but I think it would make a great transition shade on my light skin, and an all-over lid shade or highlight on medium/dark skintones.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77491)(77492), Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Hod is a burnt umber with bronze sparkles, perfect for autumn days and sweater weather. It can be worn sheered or with a sticky primer for more intensity.

Vegan and lip-safe.

I've recently discovered I love coppery shades, and Hod looks like a shiny penny! (RIP, Canadian penny.)

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Iron Oxide (77491)(77492), Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Tin Oxide (778161), Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Aset, Geburah

Aset is a medium royal blue, with a sparkle of violet, copper, and silver to mirror the lapis once worn to honor her. Wear it alone, or over sticky primer to do justice to the sparkle.

Vegan but not lip-safe.

Aset is

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Carnauba Wax, Ultramarines (77007), Tin Oxide (778161), Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Ferric Ferrocyanide (77510), Silica, Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Geburah is a burnt orange with gold sparkle, representing the fiery aspect of judgement. It can be sheered down or worn over a sticky primer for maximum impact.

Vegan and lip-safe.

I'm thinking Geburah would look great Hedgeriding, which I definitely need to try out and report back on.

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Iron Oxide (77491), Carnauba Wax, Silica, Calcium Sodium Borosilicate, Tin Oxide (778161), Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

Kether

Kether

Kether is a chameleon. What appears pink in the jar turns into a stunning golden peach with subtle pink sparkle. It's a lovely color to wear for a polished look on pale complexions, and darker skin will look stunning highlighted by it.

Not vegan but is lip-safe.

And now .... the pièce de résistanceKether. Looks pretty in that swatch, right? Well, I'ma show you some unedited photos taken in different lighting to truly show the amazing gold shift:

Kether
Kether

I think all of Esoteric Aesthetic's shades are great, but Kether is my absolute favourite and the one I am sure I will be using the most. And it's lip-safe! I can definitely see the possibilities of mixing it in clear lip gloss... Hmm, a project!

Ingredients: Mica (77019), Titanium Dioxide (77891), Iron Oxide (77491)(77492), Carnauba Wax, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Silica, Tin Oxide (778161), Carmine (75470), Silicon Dioxide, Calcium Carbonate

I'm loving these eye shadows! Each shade is creamy and pigmented (primer or sticky base recommended -- these shades aren't bad without, but they really come to life over a base), and I had no application issues. I highly recommend checking out Esoteric Aesthetic! Of course I recommend Kether, but each shade is truly worthy of checking out, and I'm definitely eager to get out of my comfort zone and try some colourful looks!
