Sephora Birthday Haul: Sun Safety Kit!

Wednesday, June 04, 2014

Sephora haul time! Can you believe this is only the second time I've bought from Sephora? There's always plenty I'd love to buy, but with shipping costs, taxes, and good ol' Canadian price markups, I just often can't be bothered. Oh, and the major factor of there being no physical Sephora location in my province. :( I'm a Shoppers Drug Mart gal for the most part (and yes, you'll be seeing a haul from there soon..), with its drawback there being no Too Faced, UD, etc! I could see myself shopping Sephora a lot more often if there was a store nearby, but alas.

Anyway, enough first world beauty problems -- on to the haul! I also received the MUFE Birthday Gift, a deluxe sample, and the three regular samples, but I'll save those for another post as this one will be a bit long!

Click below for a breakdown of the products included and my thoughts!

When I saw the Sephora Favorites Sun Safety Kit (currently out of stock) for 2014 was being launched, I desperately went to the site to see if it would be available for Canadians (it hasn't been before, if I recall correctly). I was really excited to see it was, and it had a $38 price tag, a mere $6 markup from the American price. I knew I had to get it, especially with MAKE UP FOR EVER offering this year's birthday gift that I could add-on. I was a bit afraid the Canadian ordering process was a glitch, as someone asked on the Facebook Sephora page if the kits would be available to Canadians this year, the representative replied with a "no." Not sure what happened there, but the ordering process went smoothly and the package, in all its glory, arrived on my birthday! Evidently, these kits are popular and they sold out within two days of launching.

The Summer Safety Kit contains 16 samples and $20 from each sale benefits the Skin Cancer Foundation.

Included in the kit, with price breakdown and commentary. All prices in Canadian dollars, unless otherwise noted:

Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Medium/Deep Matte Bronzer

Full size: $38, 0.35 oz
Sample size: $15.20, 0.14 oz

I'm really excited this was included, as I've heard Too Faced's bronzers are great! I probably would have benefited more from the Milk Chocolate Soleil bronzer, which is lighter, but I'll make this one work. And yes, it does smell like chocolate!

Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion SPF 30

Full size: $42, 1.7 oz
Sample size: $12.35, 0.5 oz

Sunscreen! The name "Peter Thomas Roth" always makes me think of David Lee Roth. JUMP!

I only wish my hair was half as majestic. (Source.)

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Daily Glow Moisture

Full size: $50, 30 ml
Sample size: $3.33,  2ml

Meh, a foilie. I'm not really sure why Sephora bothered including this, but oh well -- I'll try it.

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Glow Pads

Full size: $14-82, 5-50 towelettes
Sample size: $2.80, 1 towelette (using $14 price)

Another one use only sample, but it sounds like it might have some benefit. It's an exfoliating self-tanner pad, which sounds interesting.

Clarins UV Plus HP Broad Spectrum SPF 40 Sunscreen Multi-Protection

Full size: $42.02, 1.7 oz
Sample size: $7.41,  0.3 oz

Yay, Clarins! I always hear good things about Clarins skincare so I'll happily try this!

tarte Brazilliance Skin Rejuvenating Maracuja Self Tanner

Full size: $47, 5.5 oz
Sample size: $4.27, 0.5 oz

Yay, tarte! I'm afraid of self-tanners, but I might try to use this on my pasty legs.

Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 PA++

Full size: $39.50, 1.7 oz
Sample size: $7.67, 0.33 oz

The lowest SPF in the kit. I'd save this for winter, but it's supposed to be mattifying, which would make it better for summer... hmm, maybe just in the evenings?

Stila Stay All Day 10-In-One HD Bronzing Beauty Balm With Broad Spectrum SPF 30

Full size: $50, 1.3 oz
Sample size: $8.85,  0.23 oz

These names just keep getting longer and longer. This seems like it could be awesome or just look terrible on my pale skin. I'm intrigued, though!

bareMinerals READY Touch Up Veil Broad Spectrum SPF 15 in Translucent

Full size: $28, 0.3 oz
Sample size: $14, 0.15 oz

The Sephora website says some of the shades of the Touch Up Veils are 0.03 oz, which they decidedly are not because that would make this sample bigger than the retail version. It's actually have the size, which is still pretty nice. I love the "Hello." on the plastic insert in the compact! The veil is also super-creamy to the touch -- haven't tried it on the face yet, but I'm thinking I'll like it.

Supergoop! Sun-Defying Sunscreen Oil Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA+++

Full size: $10 USD, 1 oz; $26 USD, 5 oz
Sample size: $10 USD, 1 oz

Supergoop! isn't sold on the Canadian website, so score for having it in this kit. I've never tried a sunscreen oil before; looks fun!

St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse

Full size: $22.50-$49.50, 1.69 oz-8oz
Sample size: $22.50, 1.69 oz

Nice sample value! I'm not sure I'm brave enough to use this... I know this brand is much-loved by the self-tanning crowd, but I'm afraid of messing it up!

Origins A Perfect World SPF 25 Age-Defense Moisturizer with White Tea

Full size: $51, 1.7 oz
Sample size: $15, 0.5 oz

Can you believe a half-ounce sample is worth $15? The magic of high-end (and Canadian markups!)

Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ For Face

Full size: $27, 1.2 oz; $48, 2.1 oz
Sample size: $14.21, 0.64 oz (using 1.2 oz price)

There's something I find so aesthetically pleasing about the packaging of Shiseido's sunscreen line. It's summery but still sophisticated, yeah? I'm really excited to try this sample! I always like using a separate sunscreen specifically for the face because I'm paranoid about breakouts.

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 in Sugar (clear)

Full size: $26, 0.15 oz
Sample size: $13.68, 0.08 oz

Ah, the super-expensive lip balm people have raved about. I... don't care too much for it, actually! I mean, I'm glad to have the sample to try, and it's not a bad balm, but it's not my favourite formula. I much prefer OHWTO's $3.50 offering.

Ole Henrikson Protect the Truth Vitamin C SPF 50+ Sunscreen

Full size: $37, 1.7 oz
Sample size: $10.88, 0.5 oz

I expect this to smell like oranges, but I haven't cracked it open yet to smell. Just the orange tube and Vitamin C lead me to believe that!

Algenist Regenerative Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 20

Full size: $95, 2 oz
Sample size: $23.75, 0.5 oz

A $95 moisturizer, which yields another magically overpriced half-ounce sample. I love these kits that let you try high-end on the cheap!

Total value: $185.90

Pretty good value! The website listing claims the value is $210, though. I don't know if I'd value the bag at ~$24, if that's where they got the extra value from (or maybe it comes from a Canadian price conversion of the Supergoop!). I can't nitpick too much because it's still a great value, most the samples are great sizes, and I'll use almost everything in the kit. I really do recommend you buy the Sun Safety Kit if it restocks again, or future kits!

Did you manage to snag a kit? Any products you want me to review first?
