Maybelline Color Elixir in Captivating Carnation Review, Photos, Swatches

If you've been following the beauty blogoverse the past few months, you probably know everyone and their dog (note: please don't put lip gloss on dogs) is raving over these new Maybelline Color Elixirs. I am no exception. I knew I had to get my hands on at least one, so I headed out and spent some time poring over the display, searching for a shade that hadn't already been opened. These have safety sticker on the caps (thank you, Maybelline!) but some people feel the need to open them and then put them back.. so be careful of that and check the seals!

The formula of Color Elixir in Captivating Carnation (around $8-11 for 0.17 fl oz) is divine. It is slightly sticky, but feels very cushion-y on the lips. It doesn't sink into fine lines but it doesn't feel like it's just sitting on top of them, either. It's a very comfortable lip gloss.

I really love the packaging of the Color Elixir, especially how they resemble a lipstick bullet in the tube. The doefoot applicator is angled and works very well -- the tapered edge is useful for lining the lips, and the bottom really hugs them. Maybelline says it's angora, and it is really soft. The doefoot reminds me of the one the Lancome Gloss in Loves use, which isn't too surprising considering both companies are owned by L'Oréal.

Captivating Carnation is a really pretty rose shade, which isn't highly pigmented but enough to give me a "my lips but better" look. I've been wearing it most days and it's so easy to just apply on the go. It lasts about 2-3 hours on me with minimal drinking and no eating.

The one thing I dislike about this is the scent/taste -- a kind of plastic-y, vaguely fruity taste. It reminds me of Froot Loops and I can't stand that cereal. It only lingers a few minutes though, and I've actually gotten pretty used to it. I've just been spoiled with yummy, sweet lip flavours that it's kind of a bummer for me, but not a dealbreaker.

You know what's awesome? Maybelline actually prints the shade number and name on the bottom of the tube. It's amazing how many brands don't! (cough Covergirl cough) I just find it such an important detail as I want to know what shade I'm wearing, and especially when I'm talking about it here!

I really like Captivating Carnation and I want to get more Color Elixir shades! There's twenty of them in the permanent range and a few limited editions too. You can find them where Maybelline is sold -- drugstores, Walmart, Target, etc.
