Annabelle Expandable Mascara Review, Photos

Thursday, September 19, 2013

Hey everyone! It seems like new mascaras are released by the dozens every season, which can make it difficult to choose the perfect one. I know I get overwhelmed by each brand's variety of mascaras, which is why I am pleased that Annabelle currently only has two to choose from, Le Big Show and Expandable*. I have tried and really liked Le Big Show, and I'm happy to show you Expandable today!

The neat thing about this mascara is that the plastic brush lengthens or shortens when you twist the cap. Twist it right (+) and you get a long brush for volume, and twist it left (-) for a shorter brush for lengthening and definition.

It's an interesting concept, but does it deliver?

Annabelle Expandable Mascara -- one coat with short brush on left (your right) eye

In the above photo, I'm wearing one coat of mascara using the short brush on my left (your right) eye, with nothing else on the other eye. As you can see, it does a nice job of lengthening and this is generally how I would wear it on regular days (on both eyes, of course!)

Annabelle Expandable Mascara -- one coat each with short and long brush

(Sorry for differences in lighting!) Here I put on another coat using the long brush. This adds some volume without being too clumpy, though I find if I let the first coat using the short brush dry too long I'll wind up with more clumps. This problem is solved well enough using a lash comb though, and I like wearing the mascara this way when going out.

Expandable isn't marketed as waterproof but I've survived getting caught in the rain (including a downpour) without it running. It can be removed with regular makeup remover though. It lasts well throughout the day without flaking or smudging. I'd say the formula is not too wet nor too dry, though do wait a minute before closing your eyes to avoid mishaps. I also recommend using an eyelash curler as I find it doesn't add too much of a curl (my eye in the above photos has a natural curl, whereas my other eye doesn't).

Something I find interesting is that going by the ingredients, Expandable has the same formula as Annabelle's other mascara, Le Big Show. I don't personally think that's a big deal because the brushes are different, plus you're getting two in one with Expandable. Le Big Show is $9.95 CAD vs. Expandable's $10.95 price tag. From what I can recall when I used Le Big Show, Expandable has a lot more "drama" when using both short and long brushes. I'll have to make a comparison post between the two mascaras sometime soon.

Overall, Expandable is another winner for me from Annabelle! I can see this mascara being especially useful during the holiday season, when going to parties and other events where you probably want more dramatic lashes. I definitely recommend picking it up if you want a fairly versatile mascara that can go from casual to bold.

You can find Annabelle Expandable Mascara at most mass merchants in Canada, and online (shipping available to US too!)

    1. You can get some more volume with the long brush but I find it can clump/get spidery that way :/ Nice if you want length though!

  2. It's super cool that the brush expands. That's definitely a great concept for a mascara brush.

    1. Definitely saves on having to buy two different mascaras, and the price isn't bad for it, either!
