It's my birthday today. Yay!

There's a tumblr dedicated to cats and cake. Love.

Day 23: Things you've learned that school won't teach you

I really like this prompt because while school is obviously incredibly important, I know there are lots of things it won't and can't teach you.

You will disappoint your parents. Our parents usually have certain expectations for us, generally due to them growing up in a different "time." They want us to be successful in school, career, and marriage, which isn't always practical or healthy for our personal situations. Of course they want the best for us, but remember: Do what you do because you want to do it, and don't worry if you upset your parents along the way. It most probably will happen, and they will likely get over it.

It can get better. High school is almost like its own little island and it's hard to see past it when you're going through it. Once you move beyond it, life is so much better. I didn't have a good time in school, but I am so much happier now away from its "culture." The negative people in high school are now seen in a different light -- instead of jealousy and hurt, I just feel sorry for anyone who tries to act the way they did then. They don't have any hold over me anymore.

That's all I can think of right now!

  1. Happy Birthday!!! I hope you got the cheesecake I fedexed a week ago safely jkjk
The first one I haven't learnt yet.... I hope it isn't true :s
I think the thing is, I probably won't fulfill all my parents' expectations, but they will ultimately change their viewpoint and still be proud of me in the end, hopefully :)

    1. Thanks! ...Oh no, the Fedex guy must have eaten it! ;)

You have a good point. I think that's what happens with a lot of parents too, since it's nearly impossible for kids to fulfill all their expectations!

  2. Happy Birthday my dear!!
Disappointing the parents? Yup, turning 30 this year and I'm sure that I have. My dad is really religious and he was devastated when I moved in with my fiance before getting married...
And it can get better is definitely true. Just survive high school and it really is so much better. I am always heartbroken when teenagers end their lives in high school because once it's over, being in the real world is amazing. You finally meet people like yourself and you realize how small high school really is!

    1. Thank you!!

I'm sure you slept in separate beds, right? ;D

Absolutely. It really hurts my heart to hear about teens committing suicide -- it seems like it's been happening more and more. I can't say I know what they've been through, but I really believe it can get better for people in those and similar situations.

  3. Happy Birthday!!! Hope you've had an amazing day! Yes, I think your advice is so true. Life gets so much better after high school, and even if you end up disappointing your parents along the way, they'll most likely come around in time!

Yeah, I think generally parents will, or they'll just learn to tolerate it ;)

  4. I totally agree. It always gets better. Once you become an adult you realize that things truly get better and you become a happier person because of it. Also, happy birthday!
