Topbox April 2013 Review, Photos

This is my last Topbox. I decided to cancel because the thrill just isn't there anymore. This month I again opted to receive the regular box.

Not bad, but there are a couple nitpicks I'll get to.

KMS California FREESHAPE Quick Blow Dry

"For anyone who wants faster drying and heat protection. Reduces drying time by up to 50%."

Full size: $18.75 (200mL)
Sample size: $2.80 (30mL)

I don't own a blow dryer, so I'll either hold on to this sample until I get one or give it to my sister.

Elizabeth Arden All Gone Eye and Lip Makeup Remover

"This two-phase formulation easily, gently removes even transfer resistant waterproof makeup."

Full size: $24 (100mL)
Sample size: $12 (50mL)

Now, here's where I have to be nitpicky: this month one of the Privé box options was Elizabeth Arden, which included this makeup remover. Previously, Topbox said brands featured in Privé boxes wouldn't be in that month's regular boxes. When asked about it, Topbox now says they have changed that policy... which seems to me that the Privé boxes aren't as popular as expected, and that they have leftovers (this also happened last month with the Aveda cream).

Anyway, I'm glad this is a biphase makeup remover as I find those more effective. I just have so many makeup removers now!

Michael Todd True Organics Jojoba Charcoal Facial Scrub

"Unique facial scrub that refines texture and encourages renewal, leaving skin smooth and refreshed."

Full size: $18 (100mL)
Sample size: $5.45 (30mL)

This scrub seems interesting, although I already have found my HG facial scrub. I'll keep this as backup or for travel.

Boxx Cosmetics Travel Size Brush

"Brush hairs are made of the best quality European sable, super-soft goat and 3 toned synthetic Konex fibres to ensure that each application provides perfect results!"

Full size: $28

I'm happy about receiving this brush. I can't believe it's worth $28, but that's what the website claims! The bristles are soft and overall the brush seems to be of good quality.

Total box value: $48.25

Overall, not a bad box, but not one I was excited about, either. In a way I'm glad it didn't completely wow me because then I'd regret cancelling.

I'd still recommend Topbox over the other three major Canadian subscription beauty boxes (Glossybox, Luxe Box, Glymm -- though the latter seems to be AWOL). The customer service is top-notch, the samples are generally good and decent-sized, and the Privé concept is interesting, even if the last couple months' brands/contents didn't interest me. I'm just not excited about beauty boxes anymore, and I am trying to really budget myself when it comes to beauty purchases.

So long, Topbox. We'll always have Paris.

Subscription purchased myself. All opinions are my own.

I cancelled and this was my last box as well. Do you have any subs left? I dont blow dry my hair either and got that in my february box. I cant believe how expensive that makeup remover is. I use yves rocher which has the same oily formula and it is only $5-6 dollars. I hate how topbox is changing their policies and I hate to say it but theyre 'tricking' us!

All the blog posts I've been reading about beauty boxes these days are about cancelling them, it's pretty crazy. I'm not subscribed to any at the moment. I'm actually quite curious about it, but I'm scared I would be disappointed by what I'd receive. I also don't know which box I would choose to subscribe to...

That scrub looks kinda neat - Jojoba Charcoal, interesting! I agree that they probably should have put in a different product than the remover as you opted not to get a prive box.

It seems to be the way with most beauty boxes -- they start off really good and then go downhill. I think I'm just really jaded towards the whole concept because none of them really look that good to me anymore.

No subs anymore! I'll miss having a package every month but ehh, saving money at least!

Ooh, I should check out the Yves Rocher makeup remover. My favourite is Lancome's Bifacil which is even more expensive than the EA one! But I'll be happy if the Yves one is just as good!

Yeah... they have been kind of tricking us this year. I've noticed a few things, like being deliberately vague with their wording when before they didn't. At least they have better service than some of the other companies.

I think they were really exciting when they were just starting, but got disappointing after a while. I think Topbox is a good one to subscribe to if you like a variety of samples. Everyone who subscribes to Starlooks Starbox seems to love it, but it would be $22 or so a month. Seasonsbox also looks really good but it's $35 a month. Neither are in my budget but they seem to be the most impressive of the current subs available to Canadians!

The scrub does seem interesting!

I'm glad the makeup remover is a good size though and bi-phase. I just hope it doesn't sting my eyes like the Clinique did :(

I just started subscribing to them about two months ago and so far it's okay but sometimes I think.. with $13 a month.. I can actually purchase something I want for full size! I think looking back, I would much rather receive the regular box since the brush will always come in handy!

Jojoba is supposed to be really good for your hair and skin so I would totally use that face scrub.

I think I'm getting to that point as well when it comes to not feeling quite as excited about beauty box subs. I think it's just the overwhelming amount of makeup, but I am so reluctant to let Topbox go because I don't want to be put on a waitlist. I got the same box as you with the exception of the KMS spray. I received a Murad face cream instead. Good for you and saving money! I am still not quite ready to let it all go yet!

It's really quite a gamble! Some boxes I adored, while others have been so-so. They've been leaning more towards "meh" lately so I cancelled. I hope they pick up speed again.

Yay! I'm glad it seems to be high quality!

I really had to think about it a lot. I'm sure I'll be regretting cancelling in upcoming months, because no doubt there will be at least one outstanding box!

I wish I could stop all my beauty spending, but how much fun would that be?!

Yay finally a Canadian Beauty Blog!! Just found this while doing a search for Canadian beauty subscriptions. Love the review, really clear, descriptive, honest & great photos. I subscribed to ipsy 2 months ago, I know there had been a lot of mixed reviews but they seem to be stepping up their game. Wanting to try out another subscription, but one that's makeup specific (really picky about hair & skin care) - are there any that you would recommend? Thanks!

Thank you! I'm glad you like it!

I've been tempted to subscribe to ipsy -- they really do seem to be getting better. I'm not currently subscribed to any boxes right now, but I've heard from a lot of people that Starbox by Starlooks is really good. It's all their own brand of makeup, but their stuff is supposed to be very high quality. They're a bit pricier at $22/month for Canadians, but the value is generally much higher. Unfortunately it's not in my budget right now, but I would subscribe if I could!

http://plumpishbeauty.blogspot.ca/ is basically the authority on it -- I recommend checking out her blog for reviews and more info!
